Source Cabernet Sauvignon ENTAV-INRA ® 15EV authorized clone from ENTAV in France
Proprietary Proprietary- cannot be distributed without written permission from owner: ENTAV International
Comments The Etablissement National Technique pour l’Amelioration de la Viticulture (ENTAV) is an official agency certified by the French Ministry of Agriculture and responsible for the management and coordination of the French national clonal selection program. ENTAV maintains the French national repository of accredited clones and has created an ENTAV-INRA® authorized clone trademark to identify its official clonal materials internationally. The trademark is a good indication that the clonal identity of a vine is correct. Trademarked importations come directly from official French source vines. ENTAV retains the exclusive rights to control the distribution and propagation of its trademarked materials, which are only available to the public from nurseries licensed by ENTAV. The selection numbers used to identify ENTAV-INRA® authorized clones in the FPS collection equate to the same numbers used by the official trademarked clones. For example, Cabernet Sauvignon ENTAV-INRA® 15EV corresponds to official French clone 15. French clone 15 is reportedly a Bordeaux clone that is preferred in southern France. Cabernet Sauvignon ENTAV-INRA® 15EV came to FPS in 1999 and appeared on the registered list in 2003.

Source Kunde Estate Vineyards, Sonoma, California, via Oakville Experiment Station in Napa, California
Comments Cabernet Sauvignon FPS 02 is known as the "Oakville selection". FPS 02 was originally selected by Dr. Harold Olmo (former Professor of Viticulture & Enology, UC Davis) from the Kunde Estate vineyards in Sonoma County before 1940. The property on which the Kunde Estate vineyards were located had been planted in the 19th century with imported cuttings from Chateaux Margaux and Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux. Dr. Olmo began to develop the selection at Larkmead Vineyards in Napa County and continued with trials at UC Davis Experiment Station in Oakville in the 1950's. FPS 02 arrived at FPS sometime prior to 1963. The original material that became Cabernet Sauvignon 02 did not undergo treatment at FPS prior to qualification for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program. Cabernet Sauvignon 02 later underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy to qualify for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard. The treated material successfully completed the testing necessary to qualify for Russell Ranch in 2013 and will be planted there as Cabernet Sauvignon 02.1.

Source Mendoza, Argentina
Comments Cabernet Sauvignon FPS 04 came to Davis in 1964 from Mendoza, Argentina (USDA PI 296424). The selection arrived with the erroneous label "Merlot", clone 11. The selection was later properly identified and successfully completed testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program in 1966. Cabernet Sauvignon 04 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon 04 vines in the Classic Foundation Vineyard had not undergone any treatment at FPS. In order to qualify for the new Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, FPS subjected Cabernet Sauvignon 04 to microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 2009. After successful completion of testing, the treated material qualified for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, where it was planted in 2012 under the new selection name Cabernet Sauvignon 04.1.

Source Former UC Foothill Experiment Station, Jackson, California
Comments Dr. Austin Goheen (UC Davis) rescued Cabernet Sauvignon 06 from the former University of California Foothill Experiment Station in Jackson, California, in 1963. UC held title to the property where the Experiment Station was located from 1889 to 1903, after which the station was abandoned. The vines remained relatively undisturbed for over 50 years. The story of Dr. Goheen's rediscovery of the vineyard is contained in the 2006 FPS Grape Program Newsletter, "The Jackson Vineyard". Cabernet Sauvignon 06 first appeared on the list of registered vines in 1969 and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard. Cabernet Sauvignon 06 was subjected to microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 2009. The new material successfully completed testing under the 2010 Protocol and was planted in the new Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard under the new selection number Cabernet Sauvignon 06.1.

Source Concannon vineyard in Livermore, Alameda County, California
Comments Cabernet Sauvignon FPS 08 is one of three selections at Foundation Plant Services (FPS 07, 08, 11) taken from the same single vine source: Concannon R34 v2. The selection was made by C.J. Alley in 1965 when he was managing Foundation Plant Services (the selection was known then as Superclone #102). Cabernet Sauvignon 08 and 11 both underwent heat treatment for 168 days. In a 1991 letter, Dr. Harold Olmo (Department of Viticulture & Enology, UC Davis) indicated that no differences had been noted between the performance of Cabernet Sauvignon 08 and 11. Cabernet Sauvignon 08 first appeared on the list of registered vines in 1971 and remains planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard. At the time Cabernet Sauvignon 08 was originally being tested for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, FPS (in 1997) made a backup vine by way of microshoot tip tissue culture therapy on the original plant material. That backup vine was also installed in the Classic Foundation Vineyard but was never given a selection number. The treated backup vine successfully completed testing to qualify for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard in 2011; the selection was named Cabernet Sauvignon 08.1 when it was planted in the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard.

Source Heritage Disney Silverado clone, Napa, California
Comments Cabernet Sauvignon FPS 30 is one of three well-respected Cabernet Sauvignon clones that were selected by Phil Freese and Deborah Golino in 1989 from Napa Valley vineyards with a reputation for quality wine production. The Disney Silverado selection was collected from an old vineyard off the Silverado Trail, possibly by the Napa River. That vineyard was believed to be planted with the "See clone" of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Disney-Silverado plant material that was brought to Foundation Plant Services in 1989 (later Cabernet Sauvignon 30) was infected with virus and underwent microshoot tip tissue culture treatment at FPS. Cabernet Sauvignon 30 successfully completed testing for the California Registration & Certification Program in 1999 and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard. Cabernet Sauvignon 30 vines were tested under the 2010 Protocol and the material qualified for planting at the new Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, where it was planted in 2012 under the name Cabernet Sauvignon 30.1.

Source Reported to be clone 191 from France
Comments The original material for Cabernet Sauvignon 34 came to Foundation Plant Services from France as a proprietary selection in 1995. The selection is reported to be French clone 191. FPS refers to this material as a 'generic French clone'. This importation preceded the official ENTAV-INRA® clone authorization program (2001), so the identity of a generic French clone cannot be guaranteed under that official program. The generic clone material was given the 'next in order' number at FPS for the variety at issue at the time of the importation (and was not given the 'reported French clone number'). Cabernet Sauvignon 34 underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 1996. The selection successfully completed testing for the California Registration & Certification Program and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2000. The proprietary status for this selection expired in 2002 and it is now available in the FPS public collection.

Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services from the Chambre D' Agriculture de la Gironde in 1989 as part of a project funded by Winegrowers of California. The material is reported to be French clone 337. The original material underwent microshoot tip tissue culture disease elimination therapy in 2003. The long delay in successful treatment of the original material was attributable to a propagation error made in the 1990's. After successful completion of disease testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Cabernet Sauvignon 47 was planted in the Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2007. DNA analysis performed in the fall of 2007 confirmed that this selection is Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon 47 vines were tested using the 2010 Protocol and successfully completed those tests.
