Comments This variety probably originated in Spain and is known there as Garnacha tinta. It is also a well-known variety in southern France under the name Grenache noir.

Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in the late 1950's from a vineyard near Livingston, California. After basic index testing, the selection was planted in the old foundation vineyard in 1961 as Grenache 01A. The name of the selection was changed in 2002 from Grenache to Grenache noir to distinguish Grenache noir from white and grey forms of Grenache.

Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 1963 from the former University of California Foothill Experiment Station at Jackson in Amador County, California. The vines at the former station were rediscovered at that time by Dr. Austin Goheen. After basic index testing, the original material was planted in the foundation vineyard in 1966 as Grenache 03. The name was changed in 2002 from Grenache to Grenache noir to distinguish Grenache noir from the white and grey forms of Grenache. Grenache noir 03 underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 2011 in order to qualify for planting in the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard. The treated material successfully completed testing in 2013 and was planted at Russell Ranch as Grenache noir 03.1.

Comments This proprietary selection was imported to Foundation Plant Services in 1998 from Rauscedo Nursery in Italy. The material is VCR clone 3. After successfully completing testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, the selection was planted in the foundation vineyard as Grenache 04. The name was changed in 2002 from Grenache to Grenache noir to distinguish Grenache noir from the white and grey forms of Grenache. Grenache noir 04 is distributed by Rauscedo licensees in the United States, including Novavine Grapevine Nursery.
