Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 1977 from the Station de Recherches Viticoles, Domaine de Vassal, France (USDA Plant Identification number 422377). The material underwent heat treatment for 149 days at FPS and was ultimately planted in the foundation vineyard in 1985. A tissue-cultured version of this selection has qualified for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard (see Viognier 01.1).

Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 1977 from the Station de Recherches Viticoles, Domaine de Vassal, France (USDA Plant Identification number 422377). The material underwent heat treatment for 149 days at FPS and was ultimately planted in the foundation vineyard in 1985. Viognier 01 underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 2011 to qualify for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard. The treated material successfully completed testing in 2013 and will be planted at Russell Ranch as Viognier 01.1.

Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 1999 from a vineyard in Lodi, California. After successful completion of testing for the California Registration & Certification Program, Viognier 03 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2001. The name of this selection was changed in 2002 from Roussanne to Viognier after DNA analysis confirmed Dr. Jean-Michel Boursiquot's opinion that the selection had been previously misidentified. At the same time as the original plant material was undergoing testing, FPS created backup vines for that selection (in 1999) using microshoot tip tissue culture therapy. Those backup vines were planted in the Classic Foundation Vineyard without assignment of a formal selection number. That backup material successfully completed testing to qualify for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, where it was planted in 2011 as Viognier 03.1.

The original plant material underwent microshoot tip tissue culture disease elimination therapy at FPS in 1999 and qualified for the FPS foundation vineyard in 2006.

Comments This heritage Viognier selection was donated to the FPS public grapevine collection in 2016 by viticulturist Larry Hyde of Carneros, Napa. The selection originated from a vine at Hyde Vineyards. Hyde has designated the material as the Phelps clone.
