Registration Status Provisional Provisional Status is an important term used in the regulations of the California Department of Food & Agriculture's Grapevine Registration & Certification Program. Grapevine selections with Provisional Status have successfully completed all required disease testing, but have not been confirmed as true to variety. Propagation material from Provisional selections qualifies for release subject to the understanding on the part of the customer that the identity has yet to be confirmed.

Source Reported to be French clone 300
Treatments Microshoot tip tissue culture therapy
Comments This Syrah clone was imported to Foundation Plant Services from France in 1995 for a private nursery. The plant material is reported to be French clone 300. The importation was accomplished prior to the initiation of the ENTAV-INRA trademark program for official French clonal material. The words 'reported to be' indicate that the authenticity of the clonal material cannot be guaranteed for this selection. The original material for this selection underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 1996. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Syrah 04 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2000. The selection has been donated to the FPS public grapevine collection.

Treatments None, RSP+
Comments This selection was donated to the public grapevine collection at Foundation Plant Services in 1998 by a U.C. Viticulture Extension Specialist. The original material was designated as the 'Durell clone' from the University of California, Hopland Research & Extension Center in Mendocino County, California. The selection successfully completed testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2000.

  Syrah 09
Source Sirah FPS 01, from l'Espiguette, France
Treatments Tissue culture therapy (1997)
Comments Syrah 09 was imported from Domaine de l’Espiguette, France, in 1973 by Austin Goheen (USDA Plant Introduction no. 391452). The cuttings were supplied by M. Claude Valat at the Association Nacionale Technique pour l’Amelioration de la Viticulture. Although the material was referred to as ‘Syrah’ in the plant introduction records, the selection was planted in the FPS foundation vineyard in 1976 under the name Sirah 01. At the time, FPMS already had a selection with the name Syrah 01; in order to avoid duplication, the name of the Espiguette introduction was assigned as Sirah 01. The original material for this selection tested positive for Rupestris stem pitting virus, which was not allowed in the new FPS foundation vineyard in Brooks tract. In order to qualify for the foundation vineyard (now known as the Classic Foundation Vineyard), Sirah 01 underwent tissue culture therapy in 1997 and was released as Syrah 09 in 2001. In 2007, a hold was placed on the only Syrah 09 vine in the FPS foundation vineyard due to the possibility of GVA virus. That suspicion was based on a Kober 5BB field index indicator test recently used on a sibling vine which detected GVA virus. FPS scientists ultimately concluded that the Kober 5BB woody index often gave false or ambiguous results and discontinued use of the field test, replacing it with improved PCR testing for GVA virus. High throughput sequencing tests in 2016 on the single Syrah 09 vine remaining in the Classic Foundation Vineyard revealed that the vine was negative for GVA, and the hold on the vine was removed. The original material for Syrah 09 had also undergone microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 2007. The treated material was advanced to Provisional status at FPS in 2011 and released as Syrah 22. Syrah 22 qualified for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard where the selection was planted in 2012 as Syrah 22.1.

Treatments Heat treatment 71 days; microshoot tip tissue culture therapy
Comments The material for this selection was imported to Foundation Plant Services in 1974 from the Station de Recherches de Viticulture, Pont-de-la-Maye near Bordeaux, France, by Dr. Harold Olmo (former Professor, Department of Viticulture & Enology, University of California, Davis). USDA plant inventory records show that the material was identified as INRA M VI-I SI (USDA Plant Identification number 391482). The original material underwent heat treatment for 71 days at FPS and was planted in the old FPS foundation vineyard in 1976 as Syrah 01. Syrah 01 underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 1997. After successful completion of disease testing, the treated material was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard as Syrah 10.

Comments The original plant material for this selection was imported to Davis by Dr. Harold Olmo (former Professor, Department of Viticulture & Enology, University of California, Davis) in 1936 from Richter Nursery in Montpellier, France (USDA Plant Identification number 113643). Although the import information labelled this material 'Petite Sirah', Dr. Olmo indicated that label was incorrect. He opined that the material that was imported was the 'true Syrah' (see FPS indexing records). Dr. Olmo maintained this plant material in the Department (Viticulture & Enology) vineyards at UC Davis and also donated the material to the National Clonal Germplasm Repository at Davis (DVIT 896). The original material tested positive for virus at Foundation Plant Services (2000-2001) and underwent microshoot tip tissue culture disease elimination therapy in 2000. The treated plant material successfully completed testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2006.

Comments This plant material originated from property of the St. Helena Library near Oakville, California. This selection was discovered during a project to collect old vine selections for a Petite Sirah planting at the University of California's Oakville Field Station. Three varieties - Durif, Peloursin, and Syrah - were found in the vineyard, suggesting that they might once have been blended into a black variety field blend that was used in the past in the Napa area. This original plant material came to Foundation Plant Services in 2001 and underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in that year. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Syrah 15 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2006.
