Source | California vineyard, Sonoma County |
Comments | The original plant material for this selection came to Foundation Plant Services in the early 1960's from a California vineyard. The material underwent heat treatment for 64 days and was planted in the Classic Foundation Vineyard in 1964. In 1997, Cinsaut 02 underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS; the treated material successfully completed testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program. The treated plant material was planted in the Classic Foundation Vineyard as a backup vine for Cinsaut 02. The backup vine never received its own selection number. The backup vine successfully completed testing under the 2010 Protocol in 2011, after which it was planted in the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard as Cinsaut 02.1. This selection was previously known at FPS as Black Malvoisie 02. The name was changed to Cinsaut FPS 02 in 2004 because Cinsaut is more recognizable internationally and is the TTB-approved prime name. |

Comments | This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 1965 from the former University of California, Foothill Experiment Station, in Jackson, California. At the time, the plant material was called Black Malvoisie (Experiment Station, Plot E, row 5, vine 4). The original material successfully completed testing and was planted in the FPS foundation vineyard in 1966 as Black Malvoisie 03. The name of this selection was changed to Cinsaut 03 because Cinsaut is more recognizable internationally and is the TTB-approved prime name. Cinsaut 03 underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 1998; the treated plant material successfully completed testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard as a backup vine to Cinsaut 03. The backup vine never received an official selection number. The backup vine successfully completed testing under the 2010 Protocol in 2011, after which it was planted in the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard as Cinsaut 03.1. |

Source | Château de Beaucastel, France |
Comments | A cooperative effort undertaken by FPS/UC Davis, the General Partners of Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles, Robert Haas and the Perrin family at Château de Beaucastel brought this plant material to Foundation Plant Services in 2004. This Cinsaut selection is unique clonal material that originated from the vineyards at Château de Beaucastel in France. This cultivar is one of a series of Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties included in the cooperative effort. For a complete story of the cooperative effort, see the 2005 FPS Grape Program Newsletter at fps.ucdavis.edu in the Publications section. The original Cinsaut plant material tested positive for virus at FPS and underwent microshoot tip tissue culture disease elimination therapy in 2007. Cinsaut FPS 04.1 was released in 2012 after successful completion of disease testing. |

Source | Spinelli Vineyard, Oakley, California, estimated planting 1885 |
Comments | Commercial grapevine plantings in the Spinelli Vineyard and Emerson Ranch Vineyard in Oakley, Contra Costa County, date from the early days of the California grape industry. Those vineyard properties were purchased by the state for wetlands restoration in the early 2000's. Matt Cline of Cline Vineyards and MAC Wines rescued clonal material reportedly planted in the 1880’s in those old vineyards and donated it to the public grapevine collection at Foundation Plant Services in 2014. The original material for five selections completed testing and were released in 2016 to be planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard: Carignane 12, 14 and 15 and Cinsaut 05 and Mourvedre 08. The original material for those selections underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 2014 and qualified for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard in 2017 as Carignane 12.1, 13.1, 14.1, 15.1, and Cinsaut 05.1 and Mourvedre 08.1. |
