Source | Durell clone, University of California Hopland Research & Extension Center, Mendocino County, California |
Comments | This selection was donated to the public grapevine collection at Foundation Plant Services in 1998 by a U.C. Viticulture Extension Specialist. The original material was designated as the 'Durell clone' from the University of California, Hopland Research & Extension Center in Mendocino County, California. The selection successfully completed testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2000. At the same time as the original material was undergoing testing, FPS created backup vines for the untreated Syrah 08 using microshoot tip tissue culture therapy. Those treated backup vines were planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard without assignment of a formal selection number. The backup vines successfully completed testing to qualify for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, where they were planted in 2011 as Syrah 08.1. |

Comments | The material for this selection was imported to Foundation Plant Services in 1974 from the Station de Recherches de Viticulture, Pont-de-la-Maye near Bordeaux, France, by Dr. Harold Olmo (former Professor, Department of Viticulture & Enology, University of California, Davis). USDA plant inventory records show that the material was identified as INRA M VI-I SI (USDA Plant Identification number 391482). The original material underwent heat treatment for 71 days at FPS and was planted in the old FPS foundation vineyard in 1976 as Syrah 01. Syrah 01 underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 1997. After successful completion of disease testing, the treated material was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard as Syrah 10. |

Comments | The original plant material for this selection was imported to Davis by Dr. Harold Olmo (former Professor, Department of Viticulture & Enology, University of California, Davis) in 1936 from Richter Nursery in France (USDA Plant Identification number 113643). Although the import information labelled this material 'Petite Sirah', Dr. Olmo indicated that label was incorrect. He opined that the material that was imported was the 'true Syrah' (see FPS indexing records). Dr. Olmo maintained this plant material in the Department (Viticulture & Enology) vineyards at UC Davis and also donated the material to the National Clonal Germplasm Repository at Davis (DVIT 896). The original material tested positive for virus at Foundation Plant Services (2000-2001) and underwent microshoot tip tissue culture disease elimination therapy in 2000. The treated plant material successfully completed testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2006. Syrah 14 successfully completed testing to qualify it for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, where it was planted in 2011 as Syrah 14.1. |

Source | Napa County vineyard, California |
Comments | This plant material originated from property of the St. Helena Library near Oakville, California. This selection was discovered during a project to collect old vine selections for a Petite Sirah planting at the University of California's Oakville Field Station. Three varieties - Durif, Peloursin, and Syrah - were found in the vineyard, suggesting that they might once have been blended into a black variety field blend that was used in the past in the Napa area. This original plant material came to Foundation Plant Services in 2001 and underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in that year. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Syrah 15 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2006. Syrah 15 successfully completed testing to qualify it for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, where it was planted in 2011 as Syrah 15.1. |
