Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services around 1965 from the former University of California Foothill Experiment Station in Jackson, California. When the material came to FPS, it was believed that the selection was the Spanish variety Pedro Ximénez. DNA analysis at FPS in 2015 revealed that the correct variety was Mantuo de Pilas and the name was changed at that time. The original plant material was planted at the Foothill Station in 1889 at location E10 v5. The cuttings came from the Central Experiment Station on UC's Berkeley campus. After testing at FPS, the original material was first registered as Pedro Ximénez FPS 02, which began to show signs of leafroll virus around 2000. After reindexing the selection, it became apparent that FPS 02 suffered from leafroll virus. The selection underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS and was re-released in 2010 as Pedro Ximénez FPS 03. The selection subsequently qualified for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard. The name of the selection was changed to Mantuo de Pilas 02.1 in 2015 after DNA testing revealed the correct variety identity.
