Comments This rootstock selection was collected by the research station for grapes and fruit in Pont-de-la Maye in the Gironde region of France. It was imported to Davis in 1962 (USDA-ARS P.I. number 279898). After successful completion of testing at Foundation Plant Services, Malègue 44-53 FPS 01 was first planted in the foundation vineyard in 1970. In addition to the untreated plant material in the regular FPS Foundation Vineyard, Malègue 44-53 FPS 01 is also available from FPS’ Next Generation Vineyard (also known as the Goheen block). Vines of this selection were created for the Next Generation Vineyard using (macro) shoot tip tissue culture therapy to eliminate bacterial contaminants such as Agrobacterium vitis (crown gall disease). For a definition of the process used to create the vines for the Next Generation Vineyard, see the article entitled ‘Micro- vs. Macroshoot Tip Tissue Culture Therapy for Disease Elimination in Grapevines’ in the October 2010 edition of the FPS Grape Program Newsletter, at http://fps.ucdavis.edu/, in the Publications section.
