Dr. Harold Olmo (former Professor, Department of Viticulture & Enology, University of California, Davis) was the breeder of the grape cultivar Helena, which was introduced in 1958. The original plant material for this selection came to Foundation Plant Services in the mid-1960's, where it underwent heat treatment therapy for 91 days. Helena 01 was then planted in the old FPS foundation vineyard in 1965. Helena 01 underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 1999. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, the newly treated material was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2006 as Helena 03. Helena 03 successfully completed testing under the 2010 Protocol in 2011, after which it was planted in the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard as Helena 03.1. |
