Source Former University of California, Foothill Experiment Station, in Jackson, California
Comments The source material for this selection came to Foundation Plant Services from the Sauterne block at the University of California's former Foothill Experiment Station vineyard in Jackson, Amador County, California. Records at Foundation Plant Services show that this selection had the name 'Pinot vert doré' (Gewürztraminer) while at the Foothill Experiment Station and had been brought to the Amador County vineyard from the Experiment Station at UC Berkeley in 1889. The original material came to FPS around 1965 and was initially planted in the old foundation vineyard in 1968 as Gewürztraminer 05. Gewürztraminer 05 was dropped from the California Registration & Certification Program in 1992 because tests showed that leafroll virus had spread into the FPS 05 foundation mother vines. Microshoot tip tissue culture therapy was used in 1999 to create Gewürztraminer 21 from FPS 05. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine R&C Program, Gewürztraminer 21.2 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2006. Additional information on the Foothill Experiment Station vineyard in Jackson, California, can be found in the 2006 FPS Grape Program Newsletter, http://fps.ucdavis.edu, in the Publications section.
