Comments Esparte is the old Australian name for Mourvèdre/Mataró. This selection came to Davis from Wahgunyah, Australia, via the Victorian Plant Research Institute, Burnley, Victoria, in 1970 (USDA P.I. number 364284). The original plant material first underwent heat treatment therapy for 102 days at FPS and was planted in the old foundation vineyard in 1973. That foundation vine then underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 1999. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, the treated plant material was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2008 as Esparte 02. Esparte 02 successfully completed testing under the 2010 Protocol in 2011, after which it was planted in the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard as Esparte 02.1.
