Elbling weiss is an ancient German wine grape cultivar that most likely originated in the Rhine Valley. The earliest mention of the cultivar in Germany was in the 1400's with the name Aelbinen. Robinson et al., WINE GRAPES, page 325 (see reference). The cultivar was dominant in Germany in the nineteenth century but is no longer fashionable there. It is now used primarily as a base wine. |
