Species Vitis vinifera
References
Berry Color White
Uses Wine
Comments Caprettone is a relatively unknown, white grape cultivar from Campania, Napoli, in southern Italy. Caprettone originates from the area nicknamed Caprettone Viuli, on the border with Trecase. Caprettone has in the past been confused with Coda di Volpe Bianca and Caprettone grapes have been mistakenly identified with the name Coda di Volpe. Recent DNA studies have shown that the two cultivars are not related. (Robinson, Harding & Vouillamoz. 2012. WINE GRAPES, p. 185, HarperCollins Publishers). Caprettone is reportedly a very vigorous vine with a high pruning weight ratio and, at maturation, reaches a very high sugar content with good acidity.

Source Carlo Mastroberardino, Atripalda, Italy
Comments This selection was donated to Foundation Plant Services in 2000 by Carlo Mastroberardino, from Atripalda, Italy. The material was imported to FPS under the name Coda di Volpe Caprettona. The selection was tested at FPS and originally released as Coda di Volpe 01 and 01.1. It was discovered that the selection was not in fact Coda di Volpe, and the material was placed on HOLD pending a correct identification. DNA analysis at FPS in 2013 revealed that the correct identification of this material is a relatively unknown cultivar from southern Italy named Caprettone. Cappretone grapes are frequently mistakenly identified as Coda di Volpe in the Campania area of Italy. This selection was renamed in 2014 to the new selection name Caprettone 01.1. Caprettone 01.1 and 02.1 were collected from different source vines in Italy.
