Comments Prior to World War II, native pontica-balcanica grape varieties like Slankamenka, Kevidinka, Ezerjo, Skadarka, Prokupac and Smederevka were the dominant grape varieties grown in Yugoslavia. Those 'old varieties' had high yield potential but produced wine of modest quality. Because of their sensitivity to low temperature and late maturity, they were not amenable for growing on modern high training systems. Foreign varieties were later incorporated into the breeding program at the experiment station in Sremski Karlovci in the Vojvodina Province in the Serbian region of Yugoslavia. (See reference 77). This grape cultivar was one of the older varieties that exhibited high yields but modest wines.

Comments This cultivar was donated to the grapevine collection of the National Clonal Germplasm Repository (Davis) in 1983 by Dr. Harold Olmo, Professor of the Department of Viticulture & Enology, UC Davis. The material was at location X33: 5-6 during Dr. Olmo's tenure at UCD and location E5: 7-8 during Frederic Bioletti's tenure at UC. The accession has the number DVIT 958 at the NCGR. The accession somehow became misidentified as Grillo somewhere in the process of moving from the Department vineyard to the NCGR to Foundation Plant Services. The material came to FPS in the mid-1960's as Grillo and underwent heat treatment for 93 days. It successfully completed testing at FPS but was on an identification hold for possible mis-identification for a number of years. DNA testing in 2012 revealed the true identity of this cultivar as Slankamenka. The identification hold was lifted and the selection became Slankamenka FPS 01 in 2013.
