FPS continues to develop its collection of hybrid grapes and other grape cultivars that have demonstrated resistance to a bacterial pest that has long plagued wine grape growers in the southern and southeastern regions of the United States, i.e., Pierce’s Disease. The disease is also present in California.
Dr. Mark Black of the Texas AgriLife Extension (Texas A&M) has recommended that several wine grape cultivars that may help manage the PD problem be included in FPS public grapevine collection. One of those cultivars is MissBlanc, which was bred and developed at Mississippi State University and released in 1982.
The original material for this selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 2012 from Dr. Mark Black, Extension Plant Pathologist of the AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M University System, Uvalde, Texas. The plant material originated from a TAMU vineyard in College Station, Texas. The original material successfully completed testing to qualify for the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2013.
The original material underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 2014 and qualified for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard in 2017. |
