Two of the synonyms used in the United States for the variety, Lenoir and Black Spanish, have been confirmed by DNA analysis. Jerry Dangl, Plant Identification Lab Manager, Foundation Plant Services, UC Davis.
The Black Spanish variety is grown in Texas, where it is used to make port wines. It is reportedly resistant to Pierce's Disease.
