Comments This red wine variety was developed by grape breeder Fay Triplett of Ceres, California, and is named after his wife, Maxine. Fruit ripening is early with superior compositional balance in this variety. University of California Viticulture Extension Specialist Peter Christensen describes this variety as follows: medium vigor with upright shoots and a favorably open canopy; clusters small to medium, loose to well-filled, short conical, sometimes shouldered or winged; medium-small, dark berries with tough skin and very low rot potential; highly fruitful, but with small clusters; this variety ripens very early and with superior balance - high Brix and TA and low pH. A full summary of the grape's performance in the field and a description of the resulting wine can be found in the Foundation Plant Services' 2007 Grape Program newsletter at http://fps.ucdavis.edu/ under Publications/Grape.
