Comments Bon noir is a French cultivar that was developed from a cross between Millardet et de Grasset 101-14 x Knipperlé, made by a private breeder named Eugène Kuhlman. Knipperlé is a white wine grape (with dark berries) that was introduced into Alsace in 1756 and has the same pedigree as Chardonnay (Pinot x Gouais blanc). Jancis Robinson. 2006. Oxford Companion to Wine. Bon noir is reportedly a cold hardy red wine variety with moderate disease resistance.

Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 2006 from the Research Evaluation Quarantine Block at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station (Cornell University) in Geneva, New York. Dr. Bruce Reisch reported that the variety is a cold hardy red wine variety with moderate disease resistance. The original (untreated) material completed quarantine testing at FPS and qualified for the Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2010.
