| Comments | There is some ambiguity associated with the variety names Refosco and Mondeuse. The TTB has approved the two names Refosco and Mondeuse for use as synonyms on wine labels in the United States. The confusion arises from the fact that two distinct grape varieties are known by the name Refosco. There is a grape variety from the Friuli region in Italy whose prime name is Refosco. That Italian Refosco is a completely different grape variety than the second variety associated with the name Refosco. The second variety is from France and is known by the prime name of Mondeuse noir in that country -the name Refosco is used as a synonym for the French Mondeuse noir. DNA testing at Foundation Plant Services revealed that the grape formerly known in California for many years as Refosco was in fact the French variety Mondeuse noir.
