Tinta Barroca Selections

Information about: Clonal Families, Selection Numbers and Registration Status

Tinta Barroca [02]
Registration Status Registered
Source Portugal in 1981
Comments This selection was imported to Davis in 1981 by Dr. Harold Olmo (former Professor, Department of Viticulture & Enology, University of California, Davis) from Cockburn Co., Tua (Dourou) Oporto in the Douro region of Portugal. DNA tests at FPS show that the selection matches Tinta Barroca references from Portugal. The original plant material underwent heat treatment for 73 days at FPS. That material also underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 2000. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Tinta Barroca 02 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2006. Tinta Barroca 02 successfully completed testing to qualify for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, where it was planted in 2011 as Tinta Barroca 02.1.

Tinta Barroca [310]
Registration Status Registered
Source Jorge Böhm, Viveiros Plansel S.A., Portugal
Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 2007 from Jorge Böhm, Viveiros Plansel S.A., in Portugal. The material was JPB clone 310 from the Douro. The original material successfully completed testing to qualify for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program in 2009 and was planted initially as Tinta Barocca FPS 03, later changed to Tinta Barocca PLANSEL 310. The material underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 2009 and those vines were planted in the Classic Foundation Vineyard once they successfully completed testing (see Tinta Barocca 310.1 and 310.2). After several years as a proprietary selection, Tinta Barocca 310 was released to the FPS public grapevine collection in 2019.
