The Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) reports the following on the page for Barlinka (Plant Introduction Number 337158): A grape cultivar permitted for wine production in South Africa in terms of the Wine of Origin legislation. A large black grape with a tough skin, it is far better known as a table grape for export purposes. It was imported to South Africa in 1910 from Algeria by the late Professor A.I. Perold. In 1979, there were just over 55 million vines of this variety in South African vineyards, most of them in the Worcester and Hex River areas, where they constitute the bulk of the export table grapes. |
