| Comments |
Verdejo is a Spanish grape variety that is planted primarily in Spain's Rueda region (Valladolid). DNA results in Madrid suggest that Verdejo is a synonym of a grape known in Valencia as Planta fina. Verdejo is ampellographically similar to Verdelho de Madeira but they are not the same grape variety. |

This selection is one of a group of grape varieties that came to Foundation Plant Services in 2000 from the Instituto Tecnológico Agrario de Castilla y León (ITACyl) in Valladolid, Spain. The grape material was donated to the FPS public grapevine collection under a collaborative agreement between ITACyL and FPS. The source of this selection is CL-4, which stands for 'Castilla y León 4'. The original material successfully completed testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard as Verdejo 01. A backup vine was created by FPS in 2000 using microshoot tip tissue culture therapy. That backup vine was planted in the Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2004 without assignment of a formal selection number. The backup vine successfully completed testing to qualify for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard, where it will be planted in 2013 as Verdejo FPS 01.1. |
