Comments At one time it was thought that Plavac mali was the source of California's Zinfandel variety. Later DNA profiling showed that the Croatian variety Crljenak kastelanski shared a DNA profile with both Zinfandel and Primitivo. The latter variety is one of the parents of Plavac Mali. There is a clone of Plavac Mali that has a color mutation of the berries; that clone is called Plavac mali gris (see photo 2 in photo rotation above). There is also a white grape variety in Croatia called Plavac.
