Comments Valdigue was originally misnamed in California and known as Napa Gamay or Gamay until 1980 when it was properly identified by Pierre Galet. The California grape's identity as Valdigue has been verified by DNA fingerprinting. The name Gamay is no longer allowed on wine labels for Valdigue grapes. Validigue fruit was allowed in wines labelled Gamay Beaujolais until 2007. (Wine Grape Varieties in California, reference #2).

Comments This selection's history began at FPS in the 1980's and proceeded as follows: Gamay 01> Gamay 02 > Napa Gamay 02 > Valdiguié 02. The original plant material was labelled Gamay FPs 01 when it arrived at FPS. The name of this selection was changed from Napa Gamay FPS 02 to Valdiguié FPS 02 in 2003 because Valdiguié is more recognizable internationally and is the prime name approved by TTB.

Comments This selection came to Davis around 1960 from the Landes-Lehr-und-Forschungsanstalt Wein-und-Gartenbau in Neustadt an der Wein, Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. The selection was named Gamay Grand, ' local name' (USDA Plant Identification number 259020). DNA testing at FPS in 2017 revealed the identity of the variety to be Valdiguie. The selection was renamed Valdiguie 06.
