Source Former Foothill Experiment Station, Jackson, California
Treatments Heat treatment 242 days
Comments This selection came to FPS around 1965 from UC's former Foothill Experiment Station in Jackson, California. It was located at row E4 vine 9 at the Experiment Station. Documents at FPS refer to the original plant material for this selection as 'Fontella type'. The material underwent heat treatment for 242 days at FPS and was planted in the foundation vineyard in 1970 as Tinta Amarella 01. Tinta Amarella 01 has qualified for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard (see Tinta Amarella 01.1).

Comments This selection was imported to Foundation Plant Services in 1984 by Dr. Harold Olmo (former Professor, Department of Viticulture & Enology, University of California, Davis) from the Regua Agricultural Station in the Douro region of Portugal. The original material underwent heat treatment therapy at FPS for 60 days in 1985. The selection also underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy in 1996. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Tinta Amarella 02 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 1995.

Comments Foundation Plant Services is unsure of the exact source and date of introduction for this selection. The original material came from Portugal sometime prior to 1990. The original material tested positive for leafroll virus and underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 1995. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Tinta Amarella 03 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2005.
