Comments Schiava grossa is the most popular cultivar of the Schiava group of grapes and is distinct for its larger bunches and berries. This dark skinned cultivar is native to the Trentino Alto Adige area of Italy. It is known as Vernatsch by the German speakers of Alto Adige and as Trollinger in the German region of Württemburg, where it is widely grown. Schiava grossa is a parent of Kerner, Rotberger and many other cultivars. Robinson et al. WINE GRAPES, pages 972-974 (2012).

  Schiava grossa 01
Registration Status Registered Registered is the ultimate status in the California Department of Food & Agricultures Grapevine Registration & Certification Program. Registered selections have successfully completed all disease testing required by the regulations. Registered selections have also been confirmed as true to variety by experts using visual observations, DNA-based testing or both.
Source Northern Italy via vineyard at Rutgers University

Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 2012 from Dr. Dan Ward, Viticulture Extension Specialist, Rutgers University in New Jersey. The plant material has been grown in the vineyard at the Agriculture, Research and Extension Center at Rutgers since the early 1990's. The material was imported to Rutgers at that time from Trentino Alto-Adige, in northern Italy, and came into the United States through the quarantine program at Geneva, New York. It is believed that this clone might be more cold tolerant than other clones of this cultivar. The original plant material successfully completed testing to qualify for the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2015. Schiava grossa 01 is the original (untreated) mother vine material for this clone.
