The Riesling variety is known in Italy as Riesling renano. Riesling renano 01 came to Foundation Plant Services in 1998 from Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo (VCR) in Italy. The plant material is VCR clone 3. It is reported that VCR 3 has small clusters and average and uniform berries, with good resistance to botrytis bunch rot. Calò et al., 2001. The original plant material underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 1998. After successful completion of testing for the California Grapevine Registration & Certification Program, Riesling renano 01 was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard in 2003. Riesling renano 01 successfully completed testing under the 2010 Protocol and was planted in the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard in 2012 as Riesling renano 01.1. Riesling renano 01 is a proprietary selection that is distributed by Novavine Nurseries. Novavine has chosen to retain the synonym name Riesling renano for this selection.
