| Comments | The United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, released this rootstock cultivar in 2012. Demko 10-17A is a grape rootstock with very good nematode resistance. The original cross was made by Dr. Charles Demko, a private breeder in Altoona, Florida. The cultivar was obtained by John Weinberger about 1957 and grown in U.S.D.A. plots at the research station in Fresno, California. Demko 10-17A has been tested in the San Joaquin Valley of California as a rootstock for table, raisin and wine grapes. The USDA release notice (link posted below) gives a complete description of greenhouse and field tests showing resistance to certain nematodes. The release notice also describes an evaluation of the rootstock cultivar in trials with certain wine and table grapes at California State University, Fresno, between 1999-2002. Demko 10-17A has been tested at Foundation Plant Services, University of California, Davis, and found to be free of known viruses. The virus-tested material may be obtained from FPS. Demko 10-17A has also been deposited in the National Plant Germplasm System, where it is available for research purposes, including breeding and development of new cultivars. Limited quantities of cuttings and additional information about the cultivar may be obtained by writing to David W. Ramming, [email protected], USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics Research Unit, 9611 South Riverbend Avenue, Parlier, CA 93648. |
