| Comments | Mortensen Hardy is a presumed bud mutation of Florida BD 12-49. In correspondence to Dr. Bob Randall dated 1997, Mortensen described the original BD 12-49 as a 'large-berried, light green selection with resistance to PD and good fresh fruit quality, although seeded'. The mutated cultivar was selected by Dr. Bob Randall in Houston, Texas, from cuttings received by Leon T. Atlas from Dr. John A. Mortensen, University of Florida, about 1985. Dr. Randall managed this cultivar for ten years. He provided Dr. Mortensen with photographs and the weight and size of the grapes of this plant material. Dr. Mortensen indicated that the material from Randall was probably a bud mutation of BD 12-49, which was never released commercially in Florida. The grapes of this mutation showed 'superior qualities' (size). This cultivar was ultimately released therough Treesearch Farms in Houston with the permission of Dr. Mortensen. For a description of the origin of Mortensen Hardy, see the article posted below, written by Dr. Bob Randall in 1997. |
