Comments Elbling weiss is an ancient German wine grape cultivar that most likely originated in the Rhine Valley. The earliest mention of the cultivar in Germany was in the 1400's with the name Aelbinen. Robinson et al., WINE GRAPES, page 325 (see reference). The cultivar was dominant in Germany in the nineteenth century but is no longer fashionable there. It is now used primarily as a base wine.

Source Germany (1939) via UCD Department vineyard via National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Davis
Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 2014 from the grapevine collection at the USDA's National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Davis, California. The accession number at the NCGR was DVIT 1014. DVIT 1014 was donated to the Repository by Dr. Harold Olmo from the Department of Viticulture vineyard on the UC Davis campus. The Elbling material was imported to UC Davis in March of 1939 from H. Moog at the Lehr-und Forschunganstalt fur Wein-Obst-und Gartenblau in Germany. The Repository's Elbling accession was requested by a scientist at New Mexico State University in 2014 and was thereafter brought to FPS. The original material underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS and qualified for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard in 2018.
