Comments | Mourvèdre is the name used in France for this grape variety. The name Mourvèdre is derived from the name of a Spanish town, Murviedro, near where the grape was grown in Valencia. It is thought that the grape originated in Spain near the Catalan town Mataró by the French border. This grape variety is known in Spain by the names Monastrell and Mataró. Esparte is the old Australian name for this variety. |

Source | Mataró FPS 01 (which was renamed Mourvèdre 04 in 2003) |
Comments | Mourvèdre FPS 03 and 04 originated with the same plant material. Mataró FPS 01 came to FPS around 1960 from a vineyard in Lodi, California. Mataró FPS 01 did not undergo treatment, was planted in the foundation vineyard (FV D1 v 5,6) in 1961, and first appeared on the list of registered varieties in 1962. In 1964, Mataró FPS 03 was propagated from Mataró FPS 01 and underwent heat treatment for 133 days. Mataró FPS 03 was planted in the foundation vineyard (FV F6 v15) in 1965 and first appeared on the list of registered varieties in 1966. In 2003, the name of both Mataró selections was changed to Mourvèdre. Mataró FPS 03 was changed to Mourvèdre FPS 03 in 2003 because Mourvèdre is more recognizable internationally. Both names are recognized by the TTB for use on wine labels in the United States. |
