Uses of UCB#1 Seed

Pistachio Rootstock

In California, almost all P. vera is grown on rootstocks of different Pistacia species or interspecific hybrids. UCB#1 is one of the more popular rootstocks. The rootstock cultivar, a hybrid of P. atlantica X P. integerrima, was selected by Dr. Lee Ashworth of the UC Berkeley Department of Plant Pathology for its resistance to verticillium wilt, salt and cold tolerance and vigor. It is typically planted in spring and field budded 3-4 months later with the nut producing scion variety. FPS is the original source of UCB#1 hybrid seed.

FPS guarantees UCB#1 seeds to be true-to-type. Germination rate is monitored for each collection of seeds.

Red Push Ornamental Tree

'Red Push' Pistache is the UCB#1 hybrid of Pistacia atlantica and P. integerrima that bring hybrid vigor to the growth and development of this deciduous shade tree. The new foliage emerges reddish in color and gradually turns rich dark green upon maturity, rather like Photinia, hence the common name 'Red Push' (the nickname was created by Arizona Pistachio Nursery to distinguish from commercial, fruiting varieties). Well adapted to desert growing conditions (established trees can be found in central and southern Arizona, the California deserts, Clark County Nevada and across Texas) it is cold hardy to 0 degrees F, favors full sun and grows to a mature size of about 40 to 60’ tall and 40 to 60’ wide. 'Red Push' are dioecious with male trees producing anthers and females producing incomplete flowers. Populations of trees grown directly from collected seed will contain both sexes. Unlike Pistachio producing trees, these seeds are small and rather inconspicuous.

Germination of UCB#1 Pistachio Rootstock Seed

At FPS, a sample of UCB#1 seed is germinated during each collection to determine the germination rate. Extra seeds are provided with each order to compensate for expected non-viable seeds. Seed additions have regularly been 10% of the requested amount, even though FPS germination rates are usually above 95%.
