| Description |
Orig. in Prosser, Wash., by Thomas Toyama, Washington Agr. Expt. Sta. and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Introd. in 1991.
This new cultivar was developed at the Washington State University's Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center (I.A.R.E.C.) at Prosser, Wash. from a cross made in 1971. It was selected in 1978 from among 141 seedlings of the cross Stella.times.Beaulieu (both unpatented) and tested and evaluated as selection PC 7146-23. Second test trees were planted on the Roza Unit of the center in the spring of 1979 and came into production in 1982.
Fruit buds have better winter hardiness than Bing.
Fruit is small-medium size, firm, tart and tasty but smaller when overcropped; round to broadly cordate; skin glossy, dark mahogany. Flavor/Texture: Sweet, rich flavor (16-18% fruit sugar)/Firm.
Very precocious tree growth with an early harvest. Chelan is known to have better winter hardiness than Bing.
Moderate rain-crack resistance and full resistance to powdery
mildew.
Suggested rootstocks: Mazzard, Gisela rootstocks not recommended/Gisela 6 or 12 on
fertile soils with careful
management. Incompatible with
Mahaleb. |
