The Strawberry Breeding Program at the University of California, Davis released two new "extreme day neutral” cultivars – UCD Finn and UCD Mojo – which were bred for summer planting, especially in coastal climates from Santa Maria south. These cultivars were developed to replace Portola, the only other UC cultivar that is planted in the summer and harvested in the fall and winter. Finn and Mojo produce marketable yields similar to Portola but are sweeter. They will provide consumers with high-quality fruit from late summer through fall and winter.
California nurseries with agreements through the Office of Research Strawberry Licensing Program will be able to purchase limited quantities of Finn and Mojo this spring through the FPS Strawberry Program.
