Comments Vranac is an ancient red wine variety grown primarily in the area around Montenegro (which was once within the former country of Yugoslavia). Vranac and Kratošija are Montenegrin varieties that are related but do not share identical DNA profiles. DNA analysis has revealed that Vranac is the offspring of the Croatian grape Tribidrag (Zinfandel/Primitivo). Robinson et al. WINE GRAPES, page 1152 (2012). The variety known in Montenegro as Kratošija shares a DNA profile with Tribidrag; Kratosija is therefore the Montenegran synonym name for Zinfandel. Adding to the confusion, the name Kratošija has also been used in the region of Montenegro as a synonym name for the Vranac grape. Vrancac is also grown widely in Macedonia.

Comments This red wine cultivar came to Davis, California, from Dr. L. Hrcek, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia (which was then in the former country of Yugoslavia) in 1971. The material was received first by the USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository, Davis (USDA Plant identification number 364252; DVIT 2086, 2090, 2091). In 2007, the original plant material (DVIT 2091)came to Foundation Plant Services for disease testing. The original material tested positive for virus and underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 2008. The treated material qualified for the FPS foundation vineyard in 2012.
