Comments The name Verdelho has historically been used for two distinct grape varieties in Portugal. One usage is in connection with a variety that originated in Crete and dates back to the 15th century. This Verdelho variety is planted on Madeira and in the Azores but not on continental Portugal; it has also been grown in Australia. The second grape that in the past has been called Verdelho is grown in continental Portugal and is now known officially as Gouveio (Godello in Spain). By legislation in 2000, the name Verdelho was discontinued for this second grape grown on continental Portugal.
